A monthly mixed-bill comedy night in a former Brixton dance hall - a headliner you'll know off the television, and three or four acts you're about to.
Live From Effra Social has been running long enough to have a proper alumni list. Ed Gamble, Phil Wang, Sindhu Vee, Rhys James, Fin Taylor and Ania Magliano have all played this room. The bill changes every month and it is always a mixed bill.
Jurkish runs the kitchen here: Turkish and Caribbean, pides straight out of the oven, plantain hummus to start. Get in early, eat, and keep your table. The room fills up and the good seats go to whoever is already sitting in them.
Effra Social is a former Conservative club, and a dance hall before that. It was built for a crowd to gather and watch something happen at the front, which is why stand-up works here and doesn’t in most pubs.
It’s a mixed-bill night, so the line-up can move – if an act can’t make it, another one takes the slot. Tickets are non-refundable unless the show itself is cancelled.
